Nothing I could say would come even close to what you can get from a couple
of minutes at http://www.enhydra.org
While you're at it, visit
http://java.apache.org/jetspeed/site/overview.html
and notice that Enhydra is getting some really stiff competition from the
Apache group, with their Cocoon, Jetspeed, and a bunch of other widgets.
In short, both of these entities serve to offer open source java products
that perform the function of highly integrated web server. In both cases,
XML is an underlying representation scheme. Both offer XSL for translation
to HTML, and Enhydra also allows you to compose entire web sites as projects
with precompiled java classes that spit out HTML to the servlet engine and
couple database queries to that HTML.
Both projects warrant honest study (not to mention download and experiment).
I personally have downloaded Enhydra. Next up for me, the Apache stuff.
Cheers
Jack
