Alan Turing (1912-1954) was the founder of computer science, a visionary, and one of the greatest cryptanalysts of all time, breaking the "unbreakable" German Enigma code during World War II. Instead of being honored for his work after the War, Turing was persecuted by the British government for being openly gay. He agreed to submit to hormone treatments rather than go to prison. The stress and humiliation of his treatment led him to commit suicide by eating an apple laced with cyanide in 1954. He was 41 years old.

Mathematician Andrew Hodges is the author of the definitive biography, Alan Turing: The Enigma, which has been reprinted in several languages and was the basis for "Breaking the Code", the stage play by Hugh Whitemore. In a rare American appearance, Hodges will tell the story of Alan Turing's life, explain his status as the founder of computer science in theory and practice, and tell a meta-story involving conflicts surrounding gender and sexuality as well as the social role of science and engineering.
