Etienne Wenger has recently produced an excellent overview of
technologies for communities of practice. His taxonomy has eight
upperlevel categories :
http://www.ewenger.com/tech/index.htm
Wenger's taxonomy includes:
- Knowledge desktops [intergration of work & knowledge], (Mongoose,
Engenia).
- Project spaces [work], (Prism, eRoom).
- Website communities [social structures], (ArsDigita, CiviServer).
- Discussion [conversations], (Caucus, UBB).
- Synchronous interactions [fleeting interactions], (Webex, Centra).
- e-Learning space [Instruction] (Pensare, BlackBoard).
- Access to expertise [knowledge exchange] (Tacit AskMe).
- Knowledge bases [documents] (Wiki, Notes).
A great chart shows which ones are moving towards the ideal space for
supporting CoPs. Only CommuniSpace is regarded as having arrived!

At $20 for the shareware download for individuals, this is great
value (not connected!) My comments and some discussion around this
report is currently underway here:
