Over the past few weeks, we've been talking about issues that are relevant
to granular addressability. One important issue that we haven't discussed
yet is document addressability. Today, I found this article in my inbox:
http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1004-200-4821831.html
On paper, it sounds like XDegree's XRNS is what we need. It gives
addresses to all documents, and it uses logical rather than physical
addresses. There's a high-level description of XRNS at:
http://www.xdegrees.com/products_features.html
There are two major issues, though: 1. No technical documentation is
available yet, so we can't evaluate it; and 2. Will it be an open
standard?
These issues won't be resolved anytime soon, but as Nicholas said
recently, people are working on this stuff. The time is right.
