A Workshop on Open Access Systems for Journals and Conferences

Monday, May 12, 2003, 5:00 to 7:00, Graduate Center, CUNY, President's
Conference Room, Rm. 8201.01
John Willinsky, University of British Columbia

This workshop will demonstrate the potential of a new, free online
management and publishing system for improving both the accessibility and
scholarly quality of research journals and conferences. Developed by the
Public Knowledge Project under the direction of John Willinsky, Open =
Journal
Systems (OJS) is open-source software that enables editors, with few
technical skills, to create and manage online journals. OJS is intended to
so reduce publishing costs that what is published can be made open access =
or
free to read; it is designed to support the publishing activities and
research capacities of developing countries. In the course of the
demonstration, a number of the pressing intellectual, economic, social, =
and
technical issues currently facing scholarly publishing will introduced for
discussion.
John Willinsky is the Pacific Press Professor of Literacy and Technology =
at
the University of British Columbia and author of If Only We Knew: =
Increasing
the Public Value of the Social Sciences (Routledge) and Technologies of
Knowing (Beacon), among other books. His work with the Public Knowledge
Project is currently supported by the MacArthur Foundation, as well as
Canadian funding agencies. For a working preview of the publishing =
software,
as well as access to Willinsky's papers on these themes, see the Public
Knowledge Project ().
