Here is the latest rendition of the User's Guide to GZigZag, a Java version
of ZigZag by Ted Nelson.

This manual is starting to read like it had an OHS in mind. Here, I am not
thinking about all the key strokes, but rather the conceptualization of
authoring and viewing content in a very high dimensional space. Doug talks
about giving the user control of the views made available. Here's one such
approach.
One of the links on that page takes you to Nelson's (apparently) latest
thinking (though it does date back a while, it's, at least for me, newish to
the web. In any case, a quote from one of those pages is this:
"The Fundamental Text View
The fundamental view is a 3D space of galleys, itemstars, content links and
beams. [terminology not final yet]
...
To be in the environment is to be able to edit. There is not separate
application of editing; there is no such thing as a "word processor".
Anything may be edited at any time, especially by pullover editing
(described elsewhere), creating a new version."
Later, most of the ontological entities mentioned do get described. It's
always a problem, however, messing around in a Ted Nelson space; everything
has such a, um, well, different name. Ever hear of a "flob"?
All along, I have talked about Topic Maps as a navigation tool for OHS. I
still maintain that view. I believe that the multidimensional capabilities
of ZigZag offer us something to think about in the creation of Topic Maps.
I'm only running on blind intuition here. Need to hack something to see how
it works. If you can do so, download GZigZag and play. It's confusing, but
damned interesting.
