Engelbart Finding Aid
The Douglas C. Engelbart Collection in Special Collections of
the Stanford University Libraries is an extensive collection of documents,
video tapes, and computer tape backups spanning Engelbart's career from
1959 to the late 1980s. The total collection comprises some 107 boxes of
materials. The MouseSite is concerned primarily with the early parts of
Engelbart's career spanning the years at Stanford Research Institute from
1959 through 1968. The terminus of our immediate concern is the public demonstration
of the mouse, hypertext, and networked videoconferencing at the 1968 Joint
Computer Conference in San Francisco. The materials from this period are
contained in boxes 1-17 of the Engelbart Collection. The document below
is the Stanford Special Collections Finding Aid for Boxes 1-17, and corresponds
exactly to the divisions and indexing of the catalog. The finding aid is
useful to scholars wishing to give an exact reference for archival holdings
we have made available through the MouseSite. The finding aid is also useful
for scholars wishing to gain a fuller sense of the range of materials in
the collection, most of which we have not put online. Persons wanting to
access a document not available here can request a copy directly from Stanford
Special Collections. We also encourage users of the MouseSite who think
a particular document in the Engelbart Collection that we have overlooked
should be made available online to contact us with requests. Our goal is
to build a dynamic archive that reflects the interests of the users.
To use the finding aid, please note that our designation, such as "4-13"
, indicates Box 4, Folder 13, "Augmented Human Intellect Program (Draft).
[July 1961]." Documents online are indicated by the usual blue link.
