Jim Spohrer

Jim Spohrer directs the Computer Science Foundations Group at IBM's Almaden Research Center (ARC).  Activities of the group include theory of computation and human-computer interactions. He joined IBM in September of 1998.  2

Dr. Spohrer received a B.S. in Physics from MIT in 1978, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Yale University in 1987. From 1978 to 1982, he developed speech recognition algorithms at Verbex, an Exxon Enterprises company. In 1989-1998, he was a manager and later distinguished scientist of learning technology projects at Apple's Advanced Technology Group (ATG).  Jim has published broadly in the areas of empirical studies of programmers, artificial intelligence, authoring tools, on-line learning communities, intelligent tutoring systems and student modeling, speech recognition and Markov modeling,  and new paradigms in using computers. 3

Jim has helped found two non-profit websites: The Educational Object Exchange and WorldBoard: A Planetary Infrastructure for Associating Information with Places. 4
